HUGS from HALP originated to provide information to members about events in the lives of other members who need support during a time of crisis. The HUGS distribution list has grown to include members of Texas ALP and NALS who have requested to receive the notices. HUGS began as an e-mail notification in 2001, when one of our members suffered a stroke, and it has grown from there. ALP.Darlene has short-term memory loss as well as some speech impairment
(due to the stroke), but she can talk on the telephone or in person.
Her husband, Pat, turns off the telephone ringer, so the best time
to call is after 6 p.m. or on Sunday. The machine will answer, so
state your name and that you will wait for him to pick up. He may
be in another part of the house, so give him some time. He will tell
her who is calling and pass the phone to her. Just don't tell her
something you want her to tell him because she won't remember. She
